Markets for Greenhouse Gas Credits – What’s in it for U.S. Agricultural Producers?
Sponsored by National Association of Wheat Growers
Speaker: Dr. Zach Willey, Environmental Defense
In the U.S. and globally, the policy trend is toward the setting of limits or “caps” on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is achieved by creating the rules for the operation of markets for GHG credits. In the U.S. such a market could grow to over $20 billion annually by 2020. Worldwide trading in GHG credits exceeded $30 billion in 2006. What are the opportunities and challenges for U.S. agricultural commodity producers to become suppliers in this new market? This session will survey the relevant issues, including how GHG credits can be developed at the farm level and the attendant economics of doing so. Macro issues, including the state of the world market for GHG credits and the current status of U.S. policy and legislative developments, will be covered as well.

Heightened insect, weed and disease pressures; fertility challenges; herbicide resistance potential and selecting the right hybrids and traits are just a few of the issues facing growers who are converting more of their acreage to corn.
Growers will hear an in-depth discussion of corn production trends and challenges, plus winning strategies for maximizing yields in continuous corn. Panelists include Dr. Fred Below from University of Illinois; Mike Missman, a central Iowa corn grower who successfully increased his corn acreage; and Tracy Mader who will discuss the importance of trait rotation in continuous corn. |
